As one of the buyers at Andersons of Inverurie, Kerry has seen many interior trends emerge over the years, and is always aware of what is upcoming in the world of home decor.

One of this year's most exciting interior styles that Kerry has taken inspiration from for her own home is "abstract energy".

To give you some inspiration on how you can update your space with a fun and contemporary style, Kerry has shared her insights on how to bring the abstract energy style to your home interiors.

What are the key features of this style and where would you use it in the home?

Abstract energy is a bold, fun and quirky trend that incorporates geometric patterns and block colours for a lively overall look. It can easily brighten up an existing room, or create a whole new look in your chosen area. This style works particularly well in large open-plan areas, as it adds personality in what can sometimes seem like an unfinished space.

Overall, this style acts as a great opportunity to add character and a bit of fun to any room, which I'm sure we could all use at the moment!

What is the inspiration behind "abstract energy"?

The trend is inspired by some of the great modern artists in the expressionist era. Picasso, Mondrian & Jackson Pollock are a few of the well renowned artists whose work has heavily influenced interiors and design over the years. Their bold use of lines and occasionally colour influences everything from furniture design to bold colour palettes that can be seen in the abstract energy style of decor.

How is colour used in this trend?

The abstract energy style allows the use of a bold and playful colour palette. Colour could be applied onto walls, through scatter cushions or even rugs, but if you want to create more of a statement, modern abstract wallpapers could really enhance this style in your home.

I particularly like the Pierre Frey Ayo paper as it is a black and white linear design, which means you can still introduce more colour to the room that you can update over time. Paint colours such as Zoffany Venetian red & teal would compliment this paper very well.

What kind of furniture would you choose to achieve this style?

For furniture, think strong and simple geometric shapes to compliment this style and create an effortlessly modern look. In terms of the fabric, a light neutral leather or a smooth fabric for the sofa would work well, then you can add colour and abstract patterns through scatter cushions and a rug.

A statement chair based on some of the iconic classic designs we have seen over the years would add a bold statement to the room and go well with the abstract energy style. I really like the Conform Bravo chair we have in store for this style; I would upholster it either in black leather or a bold colour to compliment your colour scheme.

Which interior brand would be your go-to for the "abstract energy"style?

Anderson's has recently welcomed an iconic brand called Kartell. They're a fantastic creative design brand who have many design pieces in their collection of furniture, accessories and lighting.

Their Phillipe Stark Masters dining chair looks great either in a bold colour or in white or black. It's an interior classic for many years to come and makes a great abstract statement in any room. Adding the Kartell Bourgie clear perspex table and floor lamp would be a strong finishing touch and a great nod to this interior style.

How would you incorporate accessories into this interior style?

A major part of bringing any trend into your home is adding the finishing touches. The abstract style is a great chance to add quirky artwork and accessories to a space, to really give it some character and style.

Picasso was a master of large black and white linear portraits, so this type of artwork is very popular, with many new pieces available that would compliment the abstract trend.

Alternatively, colourful abstract canvas paintings could also make a strong statement in a room. Be bold and simple in your art choices to compliment your interior decor and bring a contemporary look into your home.

Accessories will add a fun factor and a sense of playfulness to any room. Our accessories department has recently introduced a range of small black and white planter pots, perfect for window sills or fireplace mantles you add a bit of cheer to your room.
