When you invest in a new piece of furniture you want to be equipped with the relevant tips and tricks that allow you to make the most out of the product. At Andersons, we are proud stockists of Venjakob who specialise in beautifully crafted furniture pieces including dining tables and chairs.

One of the unique features of Venjakob’s dining tables is that they are all sourced from sustainable raw materials including wood, glass and metal. Wooden furniture pieces often require a degree of maintenance in order to maintain their strength and durability.

Over time it is common for your dining table to show natural signs of wear and tear however, there are a few simple general care precautions and cleaning tips you can follow to ensure you are making the most out of your Venjakob dining table.

Cleaning your Venjakob dining table

You want to ensure that your dining table is kept clean as this is the place where you come together to eat. Moreover, you want to be able to maintain the high quality and durability of your dining table through effective cleaning practices.

For those unsure about where to start with the maintenance of their dining table, Venjakob has a detailed care instruction video that focuses on how to safely clean the surface of your Venjakob dining table.

The process can be broken down step by step:

  1. Begin by taking your cleaning agent and mixing it with water - a 1:10 mixing ratio is recommended
  2. Start by cleaning the surface with a cloth to eliminate any dust or initial dirt
  3. Sand the table moving along the direction of the grain and then remove any subsequent sanding dust
  4. Take your oil and rub it in circular motions, ensuring you are spreading it evenly across the table while still following the grain
  5. Wait 5 minutes before removing any excess oil
  6. The surface will be completely dry after approximately 16 hours and will be completely resistant after 48 hours
  7. Once all of this is done, it is now time to show off your freshly cleaned dining table!

General care

Stay away from sources of heat

When it comes to deciding the positioning of your dining table, you should be mindful of where the nearest sources of direct heat are. Placing your dining table next to items such as radiators or fireplaces can impact the structural integrity of the table. Direct heat and high humidity can cause the fibres in the wood to swell leading to the possibility of splitting or cracks along the grain of the wood.

Similarly, wooden dining tables should be kept away from direct sunlight as this can cause the wood in the table to split or crack. Additionally, intense sunlight can lead to discolouration of the tabletop which can often be irreversible.

Ensure all spills are cleaned

It is almost inevitable that spills will happen at a dining table, whether it be food or liquids. Unfortunately, moisture can cause a lot of damage if it is not dealt with quickly and can lead to watermarks or structural weakness, therefore it is recommended that any spills are cleaned up immediately.

Protect the integrity of the tabletop

There are numerous cost-effective products you can use to protect the surface of your dining table such as tablemats when serving hot dishes or coasters when placing down hot or cold beverages. Foam pads are another useful trick that can help to protect the surface of your dining table from scratches or dents as they can be placed on items such as lamps, vases or ornaments.

Be mindful when transporting

When repositioning or moving your dining table it is important to make sure that you are safely lifting or transporting it without damaging it. For example, try to avoid dragging it across the floor or bashing it against other furniture items or nearby walls as this can loosen the fixings.
