Decorating your child's bedroom can seem like a daunting task, with a lot of planning and consideration involved for it to become the happy space that you want it to be for them.

You want the room to have a real element of fun and quirkiness to it, while evoking a particular mood or feel. However, it can be tricky balancing fun with functionality, as well as incorporating what you want, and what your child wants.

To help you get started with the process, we've shared our five key factors to consider and top tips for styling your kids' bedroom.

Start with the functionality

The kids' bedroom is the one room in the house where you can go a little crazy with the decorating, so it can be tempting to jump right into the colour palettes and furniture. But before you do this, it's important to take a step back and think about what function the room will serve aside from being a place to sleep.

How your child's bedroom will be used really depends on how many rooms you have in the house, and how your whole family uses them. Some children's bedrooms will need to double up as a playroom, or you may want it to be a quiet space for them to do their homework in or relax. It may even be the place where you can spend quality time together.

Thinking about every function of your child's bedroom and how you want it to be used will ultimately determine how you go about decorating it, and ensure that your child gets the most out of their brand new room.

Think long-term

Unlike an adult's bedroom, childrens' tastes will change dramatically over the course of just a few years, so it's important that you think ahead and style the room in a way that is adaptable to their growth.

Styling your child's bedroom is a great opportunity to showcase their hobbies and interests to create a space that they love, however, don't be tempted into buying a themed bed frame if you want the furniture to be used beyond their younger years.

Instead, try to incorporate the more childlike elements in ways that can be changed as they grow up or move onto the next hobby. Adding vibrancy or themes in smaller doses will add the fun factor, but keep the overall space flexible to change. This could be achieved through soft furnishings or accessories, such as bed covers, blinds, cushions, or a bedside lamp, that will be less expensive and easier to replace.

Durability could also be a consideration for the wallcoverings & paints, as you will ideally want something which can be wiped down and isn't too easily marked, to ensure that it stands the test of time while there are little ones running around.

Choose the colour palette

A kid's room should be fun, bright and engaging, and colours and patterns are the perfect way to reflect this.

Many people opt for painting the walls either a vibrant shade or a calmer pastel tone to achieve this, however, we also love the use of black and white and bringing colour in through furniture and accessories.

For babies and toddlers, high contrast black and white patterns are perfect for visual stimulation, and will help in developing their ability to focus their attention and levels of concentration.

Monochrome patterns also work well with any colour combination. You could bring in additional colours through soft furnishings such as cushions, blankets or even a light fitting. This creates an easier and more affordable way to update the room as your child gets older.

Create a feature wall

Having a feature wall is a great way to add a bit of fun and creativity to your child's bedroom. For this wall, you can be more adventurous with colour and prints to create a bold statement.

There are plenty of options for creating a unique feature wall, from patterned wallpaper or a vibrant paint colour, to wall stickers or a picture gallery that showcases their favourite hobby or interest.

We recommend choosing a favourite themed blind and work the walls around it, with wide horizontal stripes on a single feature wall behind the bed.

Another great way to style your child's bedroom with a feature wall is to have a patterned wallpaper of something that will stimulate your little ones while having a fun or educational element in it too.

Choose furniture with storage solutions

We all know that a child's bedroom can quickly descend into chaos with toys scattering the floor. So, when thinking about furniture for your kids' bedroom, storage is key.

Choose furniture pieces that have in-built storage, such as drawers under beds and in bedside tables, or cabin beds with a desk or a sitting area below. Furniture that is multi-functional will allow you to maximise the use of space in the room, and ensure that the furniture can adapt as your child grows up.

If you're limited on space in the room, having wall shelves or hanging buckets can be a great space saver. Alternatively, ottomans are a great example of a furniture piece that will provide a home for beloved toys, and keep the room looking tidy.

Although it's great for a parent to have everything tidied away in their child's bedroom, remember to have a mix of open and closed storage so that toys are easy to access, and you keep the element of fun in the room.
