Plan your layout

Whether you’re completely revamping your space or making a few updates in your existing lounge, the most important starting point is getting the layout of the room right. Where your furniture items are placed can make a huge impact on the overall look and how usable the room is.

It can be tempting to go all out with plenty of new furniture pieces, however, some lounges can be quite limited on space and it can quickly look overcrowded. So, ensuring that the layout of your furniture is arranged in a way which maximises the space available is key - especially for a busy family home.

At Andersons, the designers within our furniture department can offer an expert opinion and a fresh pair of eyes to help you plan your space and ensure you can get the most out of it everyday.

Consider your personal style

Before choosing your living room furniture, it’s important to consider your own personal style and the overall look you want to achieve in your lounge. From traditional and elegant pieces, to modern glamour, minimal Scandi and everything in between, there is a vast range of interior styles to choose from. Deciding on a look that feels ‘you’ will help to narrow down your options and create a space that you love.

The industrial look has become extremely popular in recent years for an edgy and modern look which still feels homely. The Valley collection, for example, features a striking combination of saw cut oak marquetry tops with black powder metal frames - perfect if you’d like to make a statement with your furniture. We also love the Opera range with its patterned oak tops and metal frames for a distressed, rustic look.

If you prefer something a little more traditional, a classic country look is an excellent choice for creating a timeless interior aesthetic. Incorporating natural wood is a simple way to add warmth and a sense of comfort to the room - which is ideal in a lounge setting. The Kelso Oak range is a great example of how effortless wooden furniture can be, while the Earl Snug Chair would make a great statement piece for a traditional, country style, covered in a beautiful harris tweed with leather accents.

No matter what your personal taste is, choosing versatile foundation pieces that complement various different styles, colour schemes and accessories will help you get the most out of your purchase. It can be so easy to be swept up in the latest trend, but focusing on your own style will allow you to create a lounge that you will love for years to come.

Top tip: To help you pinpoint your interior style, creating a mood board is a great way to gather inspiration, explore different looks that you like and identify any common themes or colours that you gravitate towards. If you’re still stuck, our team of designers are always on hand to help if you need some more advice!

Begin with the sofa

It may seem obvious, but we would always recommend choosing the sofa before any other furniture, as it’s the most fundamental piece of furniture for any lounge. They’re a fantastic anchor piece and can help to shape a room depending on how large the space is and how you intend to use it. If you have a large room to fill and want to create a cosy setting where you can truly chill out, a plush corner sofa is a great option, whereas if you have a smaller lounge, a two seater sofa and a matching armchair or snuggler will help to fill the space and provide different seating options.

The Georgia sofa range is guaranteed to add a touch of elegance to your lounge and impress your guests. With a large collection of fabrics to choose from and an effortless design, this sofa would work well in both a contemporary or traditionally styled home, while still embodying a warm, comfortable feel that’s perfect for the lounge area.

On the other hand, if you want to be a little more bold and bring in pops of colour, the Harper sofa is a great choice. Its modular design and geometric shape means it’s easy to customise the composition depending on the size of your living room - plus it feels like a soft, cosy quilt which is ideal for creating the perfect setup for lounging in.

Alesund Sideboard

Maximise your space with stylish sideboards

When you’re revamping the living room, one of the most important factors is to maximise the space you have available. A room which is overflowing with items and accessories can often feel cluttered and doesn’t set the space up well for relaxing or spending quality time with your family and guests.

Cabinets and sideboards not only look great, they also offer a practical storage solution to keep household clutter to a minimum - ideal for a busy family home. The Alesund collection offers a stylish combination of washed oak tops and a soft grey frame for an effortless, contemporary look, whereas the Madison range showcases the beauty of natural wood for a modern twist on timeless furniture design.

To ensure that you are getting the perfect piece for your lounge, our talented team of furniture experts are here to work with you and give a fresh perspective and new ideas for your space while offering advice on areas such as layout options and designs.

Add details through accessories and smaller furniture pieces

Once you have chosen your main pieces of furniture, you can then bring your look together with accessories and smaller, occasional pieces. Depending on the size and shape of your space, it can sometimes be beneficial to hold off buying accessories until you have moved your bigger furniture items in, so you can get a feel for the amount of space you have left to play with.

Creating layers of textures is a great way to make your lounge feel more luxurious and inviting both for you and your visitors. A throw blanket, paired with stylish cushions, are perfect for cosying up in the evening and adding plenty of texture and personality to the space. Not only that, they’re easy to update when you fancy a refresh.

Rugs are another item which can effortlessly transform your lounge into a comfortable haven, particularly helping to add warmth to areas with wooden flooring. From bright and bold showstoppers, such as the Damask DAS02 Rug, to monochromatic designs like the Calligaris Collage Rug, they are great for adding a pop of colour to your living space or help tie each furniture piece in your room together.
