Inside Our Latest Show Home: How We Created a Masterpiece for Malcolm Allan
Show homes should be filled with inspiration. You want to see inside a house that’s truly been brought to life - and turned into a place that you could imagine yourself calling home.
The interior design team here at Andersons of Inverurie love designing and creating show homes, and the latest project we worked on was for Malcolm Allan Housebuilders at its new Lochter development in Inverurie.
But how did we create it, and how can you use this as inspiration for your own home?
Kerry Rae, Buyer at Andersons of Inverurie, was part of the team who created the style for this 2 bedroom bungalow, and she’s given us a room-by-room breakdown of the design.
She said: “Our goal was to create a modern yet homely feel. With the home being on a single level, we used a subtle palette of colours, with different textures and patterns to make the rooms flow and connect, and enhance the already spacious layout.”
The lounge
When designing a lounge, there are a few key things to take into consideration. First, working with the space you have. But second, comfort - you spend most of your time in this room sitting down, relaxing and unwinding after a busy day, so it needs to be comfortable.
Kerry adds: “The lounge we created for Malcolm Allan has a modern yet Scottish feel to it. We opted for a Scottish feel as it is a very popular trend at the moment, but we wanted to use this in a subtle and modern way with a contemporary colour palette. This home is also surrounded by beautiful, Scottish countryside, so this look pulls in inspiration from the outdoors.
“We have used a new Moon wool fabric, mixed with a light linen texture on the upholstery, and we also upholstered the accent chair in a rich velvet to add depth to the room. The accessories we selected have a Scottish feel, for example, the highland cow artwork hanging on the wall, but by adding touches of chrome finishings, we’ve made it a more contemporary look.”
The kitchen and family room
People often say the heart of a home is the kitchen, and this is no exception with the Tillyallan at Lochter. This beautiful, open-plan space is perfect for family life or entertaining, and the L-shaped layout, that is broken up by a handy breakfast bar, is simply superb.
“For this space, we worked with different textures, tones and patterns - with the goal of creating a very elegant but homely style,” said Kerry. “We opted for a black and natural colour palette and added a complementary pop of orange through the cushions and the candles. We also pulled in some interesting patterns through the dining chairs, pelmets and cushions.
“Adding a pop of colour, such as orange, teal, yellow, or even pink, lifts the look and feel of a room - adding a bit of excitement, interest and personality.”
The master bedroom
The master bedroom was designed to feel luxurious yet welcoming - a place you would feel at complete ease, and enjoy spending time in.
Kerry explained: “Pulling from one of this year’s most popular trends, we selected a soft grey palette, complemented with a dusky pink colour. We used pink for the feature wall behind the bed, and pulled it in through the roman blind, cushions, accessories and artwork, to add a lovely warm and comforting finish to the room.”
Bedroom two
Kerry said: “The second bedroom is very light, crisp and modern, achieved using a simple white and grey colour palette. The white furniture, alongside the white and grey linen, was selected to enhance the interesting house-patterned wallpaper we used as a feature behind the bed.
“We kept the accessories simple and minimalistic, adding a touch of greenery through a small cactus and orchid on the bedside tables, as a nod to the incredibly popular botanical trend.”
The use of subtle colours and textures have created an interesting, elegant and spacious show home for Malcolm Allan, and it’s definitely worth going for a visit to have a look around. Whether you want to be inspired by the interiors, or are considering buying a new home, you can visit Thursdays - Mondays from 10.30am-5.30pm, and you can find the show home at Portstown Road, Inverurie, AB51 6BP.
We asked Kerry for a top tip to finish off this blog post, to give you some inspiration for designing your own home. She said: “Try to use a colour palette that will help to create a comfortable flow from room to room, and make your home feel spacious and inviting”
