As the darker nights are drawing in and the cold winter weather is beginning to bite, it's the perfect time to cosy up and hunker down in the comfort of your own home.

To help you create the perfect escape, our interior designer and accessories guru Sally has shared her tips on how to make your home warm and cosy this winter season.

1. Layering

Adding layers of luscious, soft textures is a great way to bring a sense of warmth and comfort to any space.

You could create a snug spot on your sofa for relaxing and unwinding after a long day, or add depth and comfort to your bedroom, for snuggling up in the colder nights.

In store, we have an array of blankets, cushions and rugs in faux fur, fleece, wool and velvet, to help create the soft layering and cosy feeling we all need at this time of year.

2. Lighting

Soft and warm lighting instantly makes a space seem more snug and inviting. At Andersons of Inverurie, our fantastic new range of LED candles are incredibly realistic and create a beautiful glow without the risks of real candles.

Table lamps and lanterns are also great for bringing a soft glow to any room. This will make it seem more warm and welcoming, while giving you an opportunity to express your interior style - whether that's minimal scandi or bold patterns and prints.

To achieve gentle lighting for gloomy nights, choose from globe lamps that help to soften light, or lamp shades with brass or gold accents that will reflect the warmth of the metallics throughout the room.

Don't forget about candles too! Candlelight can create a calm and welcoming atmosphere in a room, instantly making it feel homely and cosy.

3. Aroma

Woody fragrances such as pine are great for this season, or you could opt for lavender based scents to create a relaxing space. Our new range of six beautiful scents from candle and beauty brand Plum and Ashby are ideal for adding a luxurious, seasonal aroma.

Another option is steam scenting diffusers, such as Sensum's, to create a subtle background scent to a room that welcomes you in as you walk through the door.

4. Colour

Bringing a new colour into any room will instantly affect the mood and dynamic of the space.

For standout features such as the wall colourings or big pieces of furniture, think about the depth and richness of the colour, rather than choosing between warm or cool tones. This will create a perfect canvas for building a cosy and welcoming atmosphere up around it.

To accessorise your home in a way that will bring warmth and comfort to your space this winter, choose warm tones. This is a great way to build up on the cosiness in your home, especially as it offsets any cool grey, blue or ivory walls.

Choose a pop of mustard yellow in a throw blanket or cushions, or luxe gold, brass or cream tones to add a touch of warmth that will make you want to stay curled up indoors and out of the cold.
